The sun shone, the ground was good to firm and the rugby lived up to the perfect conditions.
The 31st annual Hertfordshire County festival tournament featured more than forty teams from nineteen rugby clubs attending Barnet Elizabethans. Four Old Albanians squads made the journey.
Our host’s organisation was exemplary, all the way from car park marshalling to refereeing the seven pitches. Each squad played four matches, all hard fought and with at least one OAs team unbeaten on the day.
The competition was intense at all levels but played in a great spirit with some top banter in the best sporting tradition between players, coaches and supporters. It was positively uplifting to have played in the warm sunshine and despite some tough games – with some interesting pool selections – the players committed themselves throughout the day and played some superb rugby.
The standard was high, our squads were well drilled, disciplined and motivated. The competitive nature of the games was equalled by strong touchline support for every team. Combined with good weather, a keen wind and excellent mobile catering, it was a truly memorable tournament for all of us lucky enough to be there.
Huge thanks to our hosts, the exceptionally well organised Barnet Elizabethans.
Especially big thanks to the coaches on the day and to Matt, John & Mike for the words here.
